Langkawi is a hidden gem.

If you love cheap chocolates and empty white beaches, you'll fall in love with this island.

Since it is a tax-free area, almost everything here is cheaper than the rest of Malaysia. And because there are enough attractions and activities to do, you'll find the beaches almost empty to the point that they seem like private beaches for you and your partner.

Below are some of the things to do or places you should go when you are in Langkawi.

p/s If you speak Malay, here's a list of tempat menarik di Langkawi for you to peruse.

1. Ride The Langkawi Cable Car

If you want to feel the thrill of being lifted up into the air straight into a mythical mountain, try the Langkawi cable car.

Said to be the incarnation of a giant called Mat Chincang, the mountain top will be your final destination in this scary but fun journey overlooking the island.

The queue could be long if you come during the school holidays ( Nov - Dec) but the curved observation bridge built on top if this mountain is worth the money and the wait.

Note: You'll see the 7 Wells Waterfall from your cable car. If you could muster the steep stairs, you could swim in one of the wells. Goddess were said to swim here before the areas were discovered by humans.

2. Cruise In A Boat Along The Kilim GeoForest Park

If you are into nature -- this trip is a must.

Depending on the package that you choose in this Kilim GeoForest cruise, you'll be taken into a few caves (one was used by the pirates to stash their loots), walk around mangrove trees and see million year old black limestone around the Kilim River.

The best way to join the tour is via the boats at the Kilim jetty and the trip should take around 1 hour.

3. See The Fauna at The Bird Park

If you come here with your little ones, remember to visit the Langkawi Wildlife Park.

Your kids will love the fact that they could feed colorful birds from their own palms, pat goats and hug rabbits roaming around their habitat.

It used to house only birds, but right now there are all sorts of reptiles and creatures set for free for you to play with.

If you're tired of taking shots featuring only you and your families, you could take your picture with the tame pythons before you leave.

4. Swim With The Fishes at Pulau Payar

If you want to see what corals of Southeast Asia look like, head on to Pulau Payar.

Here, you'll be able to snorkel and marvel at the colorful corals while small fishes wiggle their ways around you.

The crowd here could be pretty big, but as most people tend to swim near the beach, you'll be better off exploring the deeper area if you're a good swimmer.

If you're lucky you might be able to see some baby sharks lurking for their lunch.

Note; The place could be closed without notice. Corals here are said to be dying.

5. See Amazing Arts & Gifts From All Over the World

Those who love arts and museum will find the Galeria Perdana an entertaining visit.

The gallery houses over 2,500 gifts that the then prime minister, Dr. Mahathir Muhammad received from fellow ministers and head of states from all over the world. Instead of keeping them for himself, Mahathir returned these gifts to the government for safekeeping. He believes that these extraordinary gifts belong to all Malaysians.

Here, you'll see all sorts of gifts from all over the world -- from swords and AK 47 to replicas of ancient battleships and formula 1 cars.

The place is big and cool and is an excellent way to spend your time the island gets too hot. Unfortunately, most of the gifts lack explanations.
